Graduated from the University of Michigan in 1971 with a Masters in Physical Oceanography, worked at the Graduate School of Oceanography under Drs. R.A. Duce and K.A. Rahn where I got my first taste of the Arctic. Received a PhD from Colorado State University under Prof. L.O. Grant in Atmospheric Science with an emphasis in cloud physics. Took a position at the Desert Research Institute for the next 20 years until retirement where I focused on developing the Storm Peak Laboratory, a research, teaching and service facility in the atmospheric sciences in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
