Purpose

The purpose of this workshop is to build a cross-agency collaborative mechanism for the long-term sustainability and enhancement of the National Science Foundation-sponsored USArray observation network currently operating in Alaska. This network is delivering unprecedented monitoring and detection capabilities across the U.S. Arctic, with impacts ranging from seismic monitoring and natural hazards assessment to enhanced weather, water, and climate forecasting, as well as atmospheric and permafrost monitoring. Together these capabilities provide a major advance in environmental monitoring and situational awareness in the Arctic. The USArray project is being executed by the non-profit IRIS Consortium and is slated for decommissioning after 2018.

Day one of this workshop will present the capabilities of the USArray in the context of various organizational missions. Day two (half-day) will focus on developing a multi-agency framework to guide decisions that impact the long-term sustainability of USArray Alaska. Discussions of funding are beyond the scope of this workshop.

Expected Outcomes

• An agreement to work collaboratively on efforts that sustain USArray.
• A set of principles to guide long-term USArray decisions.
• An agreement to establish an interagency executive committee charged with developing a coordinated plan that balances feasibility with agencies' needs.
