Dr. M. P. (Mike) Cecile studied geology in Canada at the University of Waterloo and Carleton University completing an M. Sc. and a Ph.D. on Precambrian regional geology and stratigraphy. He joined the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), Precambrian Division in Ottawa as a NSERC PDF in 1976 and moved from there to joint the GSC in Calgary as research scientist in 1977. As a scientist he was involved in numerous large projects stratigraphy, sedimentology , structural, and mapping projects. He initiated and led the Central Foreland NATMAP project from 1998-2000. He then was promoted to Head of the Regional Geoscience Subdivision at GSC Calgary, which he held from 1999-2001. He became Director of GSC Calgary in 2001. In 2006 he retired but returned to GSC Calgary as an Emeritus Scientist, a position he continues to hold at present. He has been President (1987-88), Vice President (1987), Director (1978-81) of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologist, a member of the Canadian Geoscience Council, member of numerous advisory and geoscience society committees, associate editor of a number of national and international journals. He has also participated in International Research Projects, mainly in Russia
