Martin works as Head of Conservation for WWF's Arctic Programme where he leads and coordinates work on resilience approaches to biodiversity conservation and resource management. Originally an Arctic ecosystem scientist with more than 15 years of research experience, Martin joined WWF in 2008 motivated by the insight that the challenges to societies and ecosystems posed by rapid Arctic change needed tackling from science-to-policy and practice-to-science fronts. As part of his role Martin represents WWF on working and experts groups of the Arctic Council and contributes to many of the Council’s initiatives. He bases his input on his firm conviction that the Arctic can serve as a positive example for the rest of the world as human-environment relationships are tight and living with unpredictable conditions is normality. Martin believes that Arctic change can be effectively shaped through informal governance partnerships if science refines concepts with a view to engage in partnerships with people that catalyze better outcomes for people and ecosystems.
