The Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies invites applications for a climatology professor. This permanent position will be located in Anchorage, Alaska.

The successful candidate will participate in and contribute to instruction and engaged research to identify climate-related security concerns and needs, possible solutions, and useful and relevant outputs. The ideal candidate is one who thrives in a teaching and research environment focused on the interplay between Arctic climate and weather. Having a strong foundation in understanding the processes that govern climate patterns, such as the cryosphere, atmospheric dynamics, coastal erosion, permafrost, ocean currents, and Arctic bio-diversity will help drive curriculum development and course delivery that includes:

  • Planning and collaboration to enhance Arctic practitioner resilience to address climate impacts on existing (and future) infrastructure;
  • Using pattern and trend analysis to address Department of Defense operational planning in variable climate conditions affecting operational readiness;
  • Leveraging the rapidly developing fields of Data and Systems Science, oriented explicitly to understanding and characterizing Arctic region climate change in support of Department of Defense decision-makers;
  • Describing the impact of climate change on Arctic Defense resources and weather and its effects on political balance and international security cooperation in the Arctic;
  • Defining the ecological, physical, economic, or societal impacts associated with climate change that substantially alter ecosystem integrity, biodiversity, political stability, human security, and/or national security infrastructure; and
  • Deepening knowledge on how, when, and why climate-related operational security risks arise, and how these risks can be mitigated to provide the tactical and strategic advantage to U.S. and Allied Arctic security practitioners.
