The Norwegian Meteorological Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in sea ice. This full-time, 18-month position, with possibility for extension, will be located in Tromsø, Norway.
This position is part of a new project, Digital Sea Ice. The primary objective of the project is to build a multiscale digital infrastructure that connects sea ice forecasting models on a regional scale with local and more detailed ice-ice and ice-structure discrete element models. These models are then updated by in-situ and shipboard measurements locally and regionally by satellite measurements.
As part of the project, MET Norway will develop novel artificial intelligence (AI)-based analytical methods of imagery from high resolution optical (Sentinel-2) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, marine radars, visual, and infrared cameras such as shipboard observations from Ice Watch, and other technologies to map floe size distribution (FSD) and classify sea ice at sub-kilometer scale.
An extensive background in applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches to the classification of sea ice using high resolution (sub-kilometer) datasets is highly desirable.
Required qualifications include:
- Doctorate degree in Earth science, applied mathematics, or similar;
- Extensive experience with use of FCN and U-Net techniques for analysis of satellite remote sensing data, and other observation data such as photographs, for sea ice classification, and evaluation of these using in situ observations;
- Experience and documented knowledge in applied mathematics/scientific programming in a Linux environment, and excellent and demonstrated Python programming skills;
- Proficient in English; and
- Good and demonstrated team-working skills.
Additional desired qualifications include:
- Experience with cloud-based computing systems;
- Experience with version control;
- Experience using supervised and unsupervised classification algorithms;
- Previous experience working in an operational monitoring work environment; and
- Fluent in Norwegian, or elementary skills and a willingness to learn Norwegian.
