The Norwegian Polar Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral position studying polar ocean and sea ice feedback processes. The position is for two years, with possible extension of up to 12 months, and will be located in Tromsø, Norway.
The successful candidate will investigate ocean-ice/snow-atmosphere dynamical interplay in the Arctic and Southern Oceans. The primary aims are to deepen our understanding of the dynamical processes and provide recommendations for climate model improvements. For this purpose, the researcher will analyze large sets of available in-situ observations of ocean, sea ice, and snow on sea ice variables in combination with atmospheric reanalysis, satellite products, and CMIP6 climate model results.
Applicants must hold a completed PhD in physical oceanography, sea ice dynamics, meteorology, or another related field. A Norwegian doctoral degree or an equivalent doctoral degree from a foreign university is required.
In addition to a PhD, requirements include:
- Knowledge of polar processes;
- Experience with data analysis of ocean, sea ice, snow, or atmospheric processes within polar regions from in situ observations, reanalysis products, or climate model output; and
- Strong analytical skills, including spatio-temporal statistical analyses.
The following are considered useful assets:
- Experience with combining analyses from multiple diverse large observational data sets;
- Experience with modelling and/or analysis of ocean or climate model results;
- Expert knowledge in data analysis, using i.e., MATLAB, Python, or similar tools; and
- Ability to think outside the box and be creative with using new and state-of-the-art methodology within data analysis, numerical and conceptual modelling, and model evaluation.
Applications should include details of relevant qualifications and experience, curriculum vitae, copies of transcripts, an updated publication list, and names of three references.
