The Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) invites applications for an Assistant Director. This full-time position will be located at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California.
The International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is recruiting a research coordinator to help lead a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional study of environmental change in the Arctic. The project will make expert understanding of Arctic environments accessible to decision-makers in governments, businesses, and elsewhere. SEARCH is seeking candidates with passion for and demonstrated skills at making expert knowledge accessible to diverse audiences. This position is contingent upon funding from the National Science Foundation.
This position will be key in coordinating co-production of knowledge and communicating syntheses of scientific and Indigenous knowledge. The coordinator will have opportunities to creatively reach diverse audiences through writings tailored to specific needs. The successful candidate will build and maintain collaborative relationships among scientific, Indigenous, and policy experts.
Requirements for the position include a Master’s degree, commitment to co-production of knowledge, substantial travel, and strong communication skills (written and oral) in cross cultural contexts. Applicants must be legally eligible for unrestricted employment to work in the U.S. No work visas will be sponsored for this position.
Duties include:
- Schedule and lead meetings and workshops,
- Review and synthesize academic and Indigenous reports,
- Collect and analyze scientific data and Indigenous knowledge,
- Present findings to scientific, Indigenous, and policy audiences,
- Analyze and publish co-produced results in peer reviewed journals,
- Adapt scientific and Indigenous knowledge to briefs that succinctly inform policy,
- Draft annual reports to funders,
- Maintain communications with key policy offices,
- Supervise students and trainees,
- Help build research capacity among Indigenous trainees,
- Mentor students in scientific integrity,
- Model professionalism and inclusivity,
- Oversee project outreach,
- Monitor budget and project timelines, and
- Oversee archiving of data with the Arctic Data Center.
This full-time, benefited position is contingent on funding by a grant from the National Science Foundation to the International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks. The expected start date of funding is June 2021.
