The Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS) announces their fall webinar, entitled A New Arctic Emerging. This webinar will take place Wednesday, 2 September 2020 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. local time Oslo (5:00-7:00 a.m. AKDT; 9:00-11:00 a.m. EDT).
This webinar will address the Arctic Ocean in response to present and future climate change with focus on marine physical, biogeochemical, and ecological processes, and emphasizes the underlying question behind SAS's science plan: What are the present state and major ongoing transformations of the Arctic marine system?
There will be three solicited talks, with time for questions and discussions:
- Dr. Andrey Proshutinsky (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution): Freshwater in the Beaufort Gyre; accumulation, release processes, and their influence on Arctic circulation and climate - Dr. Proshutinsky is a physical oceanographer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and has worked with observations and modeling of the Arctic Ocean since 1976. He is Principal Investigator of the AOMIP and FAMOS projects, and since 2003 leads and participates in the Arctic Ocean Network (AON) projects exploring the Beaufort Gyre climate system;
- Dr. Ryan Woosley (Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT]): Freshening of the western Arctic and the impacts on anthropogenic carbon uptake potential - Dr. Woolsey is a marine physical chemist at the Department of Earth Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at MIT. His research focuses on the carbon cycle and ocean acidification, with a special interest in uptake and storage of anthropogenic carbon in the ocean over decadal time scales; and
- Professor Marit Reigstad (University of Trømso - Arctic University of Norway [UiT]): Understanding the driving mechanisms and potential fate of increased primary production in the Arctic - Professor Reigstad is a marine ecologist at UiT who has worked with marine research in the Arctic since 2000. She has led several multidisciplinary Arctic projects and expeditions, and is currently the Principal Investigator of the Nansen Legacy.
The webinar will take place in GoToMeeting, and will be moderated by Øyvind Paasche, the Chair of SAS’ Scientific Steering Committee.
