The Alaska Pacific River Forecast Center (APRFC) invites applications for two hydrologist positions. These full-time, permanent positions will be located in Anchorage, Alaska.

The APRFC is looking for innovative and energetic people with strong science, forecasting, and leadership skills to be a part of the River Forecasting Team. The forecasting area includes the entire State of Alaska with additional hydrology support for Pacific Region. Forecasters are challenged with understanding and forecasting typical rainfall runoff flooding plus a few causes that are unique to northern regions. These include glacial dammed lake outburst floods and ice jams on large rivers.

The successful candidates will:

  • Perform daily hydrologic forecast functions including short range forecasting of flow, velocity, and stage including during high water and flood events, and long-range forecasting to include spring snowmelt, flood outlooks, and river volume;
  • Collect (including fieldwork), analyze, disseminate, and manage networks of basic water resource data such as information on reservoir and lake storage, ground water levels, and surface ground water quality;
  • Develop, modify, and utilize applicable state-of-the-art computer hardware and software components in the preparation of studies of hydrological events and problems; and
  • Represent hydrologic and water resource programs at public and interagency meetings and help resolve hydrologic related issues.
