The Department of Physics and Technology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway invites applications for a PhD researcher in remote sensing for Arctic sea ice monitoring. This fixed-term, four-year positions will be located in Tromsø, Norway.
The successful candidate will work on a project studying multi-sensor, multi-scale integrated remote sensing for Arctic sea ice monitoring. The candidate will participate in research on developing methods for sea ice monitoring combining diverse sources, developing strategies to integrate data with very different resolutions, exploring approaches to integrate contextual information at different smoothing scales, and exploring approaches to combine and utilize all available scenes.
Requirements for this position include:
- A Master’s degree in physics, mathematics, or machine learning;
- A solid background in image processing, statistical signal processing, and multivariate analysis; and
- General familiarity with Synthetic Aperture Radar and optical remote sensing.
Knowledge of the principles of information theory and machine learning is an asset. Previous experience with sea ice would be advantageous.

This appointment is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD program is three years and the fourth year is used for teaching or other duties for the department. These duties are normally distributed evenly over the four years.
