Second Circular
Fifth Circumpolar Remote Sensing Symposium
22nd-25th June 1998, University of Dundee, Scotland.
The fifth Circumpolar Remote Sensing Symposium will be held in Dundee in
the early summer of 1998. This is a successor to the previous symposia which
were held at Yellowknife (NWT, Canada), Tromsø (Norway), Fairbanks (Alaska)
and Lyngby (Denmark).
Subject area of Symposium
The research areas covered include especially the atmosphere, geology,
hydrology, frozen ground and permafrost, vegetation and the biology of
the tundra, glaciology, snow, sea ice, ecology, pollution on land and in
sea ice, natural resources, instruments and technology, mankind in the
polar regions, indeed any aspect of polar science that might be served
by remote sensing/Earth observation techniques. Please note that the
scope of the conference is not limited to the northern hemisphere but
includes the Antarctic as well.

Abstracts
Abstracts may be sent by post, courier, fax or email. However, please bear
in mind that if we are to reproduce your abstract in a booklet for
circulation at the meeting it will not look very nice if we have to use a
fax or email version. A WORD 6.0 attachment to an email is, however, OK.
The abstract should include the title, names and addresses of the authors
and a short description of the work to be presented. Abstracts should not
exceed one page of single-spaced A4 and the type size should not be smaller
than 10 point. Times New Roman is preferred.
Deadline for the receipt of abstracts: Tuesday 31st March 1998.
The address, fax number and email address for the receipt of abstracts are
given above. Authors may express a preference for an oral presentation
or a poster presentation, but the organising committee reserve the right
to make the actual decision between oral and poster presentation; we aim
to make these decisions available on the internet by 30th April 1998.
Registration fee
For payments received in Dundee before 25th April 1998 £ 225.00
For payments received after that date £ 325.00
Students £ 125.00
The registration fee includes morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea each
day and the proposed whisky distillery visit and conference dinner.
Travel
There are good rail connections from London and other major cities in the UK.
One can fly to London, Birmingham or Manchester and then on to Edinburgh.
One can also fly from a number of overseas countries directly to Edinburgh,
Glasgow or Aberdeen. Transfer from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Aberdeen to Dundee
can be achieved by taxi or local airport bus followed by a train journey of
circa 1-11/2 hours to Dundee. There is a small airport in Dundee, but most
airlines and travel agents do not seem to know of its existence.
Accommodation
Places will be available in a hall of residence immediately adjacent to the
Symposium venue at the following prices for dinner, bed and breakfast:
single room with en suite bathroom £ 32.50 per day.
standard student room, communal bathroom £ 20.00 per day.
For double occupancy reductions are available of £ 7.50 per person per day
for sharing en suite rooms (double bed) and £ 5 per person per day for
sharing standard student rooms (twin beds).
Reductions are available for accompanying children, depending on age.

Publication of Proceedings
It is proposed to publish acceptable papers as a special issue of the
International Journal of Remote Sensing. Papers to be considered for
inclusion in this issue will need to be brought to the conference itself
in final form (prepared according to the Information for Authors to be
found inside the back cover of any issue of that journal).
Papers for publication in this issue will be refereed in the usual way.
Social event
No visit to Scotland would be complete without a visit to at least one
of the famous distilleries where the water of life (whisky) is produced.
We plan to arrange a visit to one of these distilleries followed by a
reception, dinner and entertainment there or nearby. For participants
the price is included in the registration fee; for accompanying persons
a charge will be made for the event.
Accompanying persons programme
If there is sufficient demand we shall organise some other social events
for accompanying persons.
