We are seeking enthusiastic undergraduates for two REU positions we
have for ten weeks during summer 2000. Our lab at the University of
Alaska - Fairbanks is leading the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation
Mapping effort and is responsible for mapping Alaska. One position is
in Fairbanks working in our GIS lab, and the other will be out in the field
for about a month collecting vegetation data and in our lab in Fairbanks for
the remainder of the summer. Please forward this to anyone who you think

RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist with vegetation characterization of 6 grids on
the Seward Penninsula and several locations along the Dalton Highway
on the North Slope. The project will use standardized methods of
vegetation analysis and site characterization. The student project
will be to relate vegetation characteristics (e.g., cover of key species,
leaf area index, biomass, species diversity, canopy height, shrub
cover) to key climate and/or site characteristics (e.g., mean July
temperature, snow cover, precipitation, thaw depth, frost-boil abundance).
The grids offer and excellent opportunity for a student to engage in a wide
variety of field sampling methods (plant identification, vegetation
sampling, soil description, surveying, etc.).
QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate status
- citizen or permanent resident of the United States
- Knowledge of general ecology or plant ecology, and plant taxonomy.
- Skills in plant identification and vegetation sampling (we will train
you in some of the techniques and sampling methods we will be using,
but you must be familiar with general vegetation sampling methods). - Ability to accurately collect, record, organize, and analyze data;
undertake rigorous physical work and long hours in the field,
occasionally under adverse weather conditions, work closely with
fellow workers and supervisors as well as work independently; work on a
tedious task until complete.
In addition, student must feel comfortable in the outdoors in remote
locations.

Ten weeks, approximately from Mid June through end of
August 2000. Approximately 1 month will be spent in the field (2 weeks
in Council and 1 week in Quartz Creek, both located on the Seward
Peninsula, and 1 week will be spent along the Dalton Highway on the
North Slope).

RESPONSIBILITIES
The focus of the project will be to help develop a Landsat-thematic mapper
land-cover classification for the Seward Peninsula. The final paper will
focus on comparing the results of the project with a previous vegetation
map for the Seward Peninsula produced by the USDA Soil Conservation Service
(SCS). The student will work with our GIS and remote-sensing specialist.
The project will have 3 major components:
Review of the existing literature regarding the vegetation of
arctic Alaska, vegetation mapping databases for northern Alaska, the
Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Mapping project, and classification
approachesRefinement of a Landsat-Thematic Mapper (TM)-derived classification
for the Seward Peninsula.Written report with an evaluation of two maps of the Seward
Peninsula
QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate status
- citizen or permanent resident of the United States
- Coursework in cartography, GIS/Remote Sensing (preferably Arc/Info)
- Skills in UNIX and Macintosh operating systems
- Ability to work closely with fellow workers and supervisors as well as
- working independently; work on a tedious task until completed; utilize
library resources and effectively search library databases for
pertinent literature; to communicate and write clearly and effectively.
Additionally, we are looking for someone who has the desire to follow
up the REU experience by contributing to a paper relating to work
completed during the summer.
