Investigating fire with eddy covariance, micrometeorological, and isotope
techniques California Institute of Technology
A position is available to work at California Institute of Technology as
part of a joint Caltech-University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) effort to
assess changes in the seasonal cycle of ecosystem-atmosphere CO2 fluxes
immediately following a severe boreal forest fire. We have two field sites
in interior Alaska: one in a recent and severe burn (that occurred in June
of 1999) and another in a nearby mature black spruce stand (serving as a
control). These sites are a part of a broader chronosequence study of the
role of fire severity on the successional trajectory of vegetation and
carbon storage in soils and vegetation in interior Alaska. Primary
responsibilities will include supervising the eddy flux measurement program,
analysis of eddy flux and micrometeorological data, and synthesis of results
in the context of regional and pan-boreal changes in atmospheric CO2
concentrations.
The successful applicant should have a PhD in micrometeorology, atmospheric
sciences, or another environmental science, with experience in eddy
covariance. Experience with isotopic analysis is also desirable. The
position is available starting June 1, 2000. The appointment is initially
for two years, contingent upon good progress in the first year. Completion
of the Ph.D. is required. Competitive salary and benefits, depending on
experience. To apply, please send a letter of application, a cv, and contact
information for 3 references to:
