On Monday and Tuesday, June 19 and 20, intensive interaction and discussions
will occur among a group of practicing engineers, industry and government
professionals (who specialize in cold regions engineering), and university
faculty, who are assembled and divided into interest groups, and allowed to
collectively identify and elucidate specific cold regions engineering
research topics and describe research work which should be performed at the
beginning of this millennium.
On Wednesday June 21 a smaller core group will reassemble and
finalize/submit the sections of the Workshop Report. The report will be
delivered to the Workshop sponsors: National Science Foundation (NSF),
Alaska Science and Technology Foundation (ASTF), and the American Society of
Civil Engineers (ASCE). It will also be distributed to the participants at
the Workshop, other cold regions engineering professionals who were not able
to attend, and appropriate federal agencies.
The report will guide research efforts in the cold regions engineering
community, encourage faculty members to write proposals to conduct needed
research, and direct federal and state agencies to fund research proposals
which relate to the research needs identified in the report.
The Workshop is free to all persons who notify the organizers at least 2 1/2
weeks in advance (no later than May 31) of their intention to
participate. A complimentary breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided
on June 19th and a complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided June
20th to all registered participants. A block of housing has been reserved
on the UAA campus for Workshop participants coming from outside the
Anchorage area. A limited amount of funding is available for participants
coming from outside the Anchorage area to partially defray on campus housing
and travel expenses.
