GENERAL INFORMATION
ABSTRACTS
An abstract volume will be distributed at the time of registration at
the conference, and is included in the registration fee.
ORAL AND POSTER SESSIONS
Technical paper sessions will generally begin with a keynote address,
invited specifically to highlight new and innovative methods and
technologies in the discipline. We expect to run 3 concurrent sessions
on Thursday, 13 September and Friday, 14 September. Two poster sessions
will be conducted on Thursday and Friday of the conference, and authors
will be available for presentation and questions at mid-afternoon of
their respective session.
ROBERT I. LARUS STUDENT PRIZE
The author of the best student paper of the conference (judged by a
panel of scientists) will be awarded an all-expense-paid trip to the
annual National AAAS meeting in Boston, MA, 14-29 February 2002.
Students must be U.S. citizens and graduate students enrolled in any
university within the region covered by the AAAS Arctic Division.
Students must be first author and present their own work at the 2001
conference. Please indicate if you are eligible and wish to compete for
this award on your abstract submittal form.

Fees (which include the Wednesday evening reception, continental
breakfasts on Thursday and Friday, and all beverages and snacks at
breaks) are set as follows:
Late registration (after August 16)
Full Rate $225.00
Student Rate $150.00
Single Day $125.00
The cost of field trips will be in addition to these fees.

FIELD TRIPS
Three field excursions are currently planned for Saturday, 15 September
and Sunday, 16 September.
1) Glaciology and Plant Succession of Portage Pass, AK - Saturday, 15
September
This field trip, led by Kris Crossen, UAA, will be a one-day excursion
from Anchorage to Whittier, where participants will hike over Portage
Pass, exploring the glacial history and plant succession of the Portage
Glacier. Scheduled for Saturday, 15 September.
2) Tour of the Seward Sea Life Center - Saturday, 15 September
This field trip, led by Jennifer Burns, UAA, will tour the Seward Sea
Life Center, including an overview of ongoing marine mammal and sea bird
research at the center. Participants will have the option of an
afternoon Resurrection Bay Cruise. Scheduled for Saturday, 15 September.
3) Stickleback Ecology and Evolution in SouthCentral Alaska - Sunday, 16
September
Led by Frank von Hippel of UAA, this excursion around Anchorage and
Matanuska-Susitna Valley explores the life history and ecology of
3-spine Sticklebacks, and their rapid and fascinating postglacial
evolution. The trip will be approximately 1/2 day long, on Sunday, 16
September.
