Seeking a New International Coordinator for Taiga Rescue Network

The Taiga Rescue Network is looking for an outgoing, highly
self-motivated, and committed person to take on the task of
International Coordinator of this exciting and diverse network.

Taiga Rescue Network (TRN) is an international network of 200
environmental NGO's, and indigenous peoples organizations working for
the conservation and sustainable use of the world's boreal forests
(taiga).

TRN is guided by an International Reference Group (IRG) and a consensus
based platform outlining its aims and activities. There are three
regional coordinators in Canada, Europe, and Russia. The International
Coordinator works in close cooperation with these Regional Coordinators
and TRN contacts as well as with the only other full-time staff at the
International Coordination Centre (ICC), the Information Coordinator.
TRN's two main tasks are to facilitate the coordination of international
campaigns and act as an international information-clearing house.

REQUIREMENTS:
- proven interest in forests, indigenous peoples and environmental issues
- long-term experience of working in an environmental NGO and/or with
indigenous peoples
- proven fundraising experience
- excellent networking skills and/or an established network of contacts
among NGOs and funders
- fluent written and spoken English, knowledge of another language,
especially Swedish and Russian, is an asset
- excellent communication and computer skills
- strong sense of initiative
- a leader and good team worker
- willingness and ability to move to and live in a remote Northern
community

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities of the International Coordinator can be divided
into three main overlapping areas:

Maintaining and developing the network (60%):
- fundraise and manage grants for an average annual budget of Eur
250,000 (seeking new funders, writing proposals, financial and activity
reports)
- maintain the ICC finances (including paying bills, making cash flows,
yearly financial budgets and reports with TRN accountant)
- maintain and develop overall strategic direction/vision
- keep up TRN's profile and visibility
- liaise with other networks and organizations
- facilitate decision making processes (among the IRG, Steering
Committees and TRN Staff)
- outreach to new potential participants
- assist the IRG with hiring of staff
- select and train volunteers

Facilitating campaigns, projects and international cooperation (30%):
- draw the yearly network activity plans based on participant's
priorities, as well as TRN's annual activity report
- plan and organize network meetings and conferences both internal and
external
- identify joint projects
- contract consultants and project coordinators for specific projects
- assist with preparation of TRNís biennial conference

Ensuring boreal/TRN representation in international fora (10%):
- participate in relevant forest policy discussions and meetings
- facilitate joint NGO position papers

CONDITIONS:
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 31 May 2002
STARTING DATE: 15 August 2002 (2 month overlap with present Coordinator)
DURATION: 2 years (minimum)
SALARY: SEK 14,100 (Eur 1,534) /month before taxes
LOCATION: Jokkmokk, arctic Sweden. The moving costs will be covered by
TRN within a limit of SEK 5,000 (Eur 543).
