Marine geology course for graduate and Ph.D. students at the University
of Tromso, Norway

The Department of Geology at the University of Tromso, Norway, will
arrange the course GEO-322 "Polar marine sedimentary environments" from
March 27th to April 2nd 2003, for Ph.D. and graduate students. The
course will be lectured by scientists from the Department of Geology,
University of Tromso, as well professor John T. Andrews and professor
James Syvitski, from Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR),
University of Colorado. The following topics will be included:
sediments and sedimentary processes on glaciated continental margins;
palaeoceanography in the Nordic Seas during the last
interglacial-glacial cycle; glacial fjord valleys and their sedimentary
record; ice sheet ocean interactions; ice rafting and Holocene marine
sediment differences; challenges of dating marine sediment records with
the radiocarbon method; and sediment transport modelling. The lectures
will be given in English. The course will give 2 Norwegian credits
(corresponding to 6 ECTS) based on a graded evaluation of a home-written
report (exam).

The participants will have to cover their own travel and living
expenses, however the University of Tromso will provide some support for

Students have the opportunity to combine the course attendance with
participation at the 33rd Annual Arctic Workshop, held at Tromso from
April 3rd to April 5th. For the latter, financial support for travel
