Courses in Ecology and Botany at the Climate Impacts Research Centre
(CIRC) in Abisko, Sweden

POPULATION AND COMMUNITY DYNAMICS IN THE SUBARCTIC
10 points (15 ECTS-credits, C-level)
This is an advanced course, which is given in Abisko during the spring.
The course gives specialised knowledge about the dynamics in biotic
communities in the subarctic environments. The sharp environmental
gradients, which characterise Norrbottens mountain region, are used as a
natural laboratory, where many of the general principles of population
and community ecology are illustrated. The course is given in English.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES IN THE SUBARCTIC
10 points (15 ECTS-credits, C-level)
This is an advanced course, which is given in Abisko during the autumn.
The course gives specialised knowledge about global environmental
changes and their consequences in the subarctic environment. The course
concentrates on biological and geoscientific issues and we study both
limnic and terrestrial ecosystems. We focus on the historical and
current climate changes and their effects on for example the
biogeochemistry, species distributions limits. The anthropogenic
influence is studied through the effects of environmental pollution on
the subarctic environment and environmental archaeology. The course is
given in English.

ALPINE BOTANY
5 points (7.5 ECTS-credits, A-level)
This basic summer course, which is offered in Abisko, gives a thorough
knowledge of species composition of the flora, zonations from the
mountain birch forest up to the alpine tundra. Attention is in
particular given to how different environmental factors, such as snow,
wind and the state of the ground influence the distribution of species
both at different heights and between different altitudes. The course is
given in Swedish.
