Deadline: 15 July 2003
The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) invites
applicants for a 3-year PhD scholarship starting 1 August 2003, as part
of the project "Marine Climate and Ecosystems in the Seasonal ice Zone".
The project is a partnership between 8 Norwegian institutions, funded by
the Research Council of Norway and co-ordinated by NERSC
The PhD study shall focus on the variability and linkages between
climate sensitive variables of the sea-ice, the atmosphere, the ocean
and circulation indices as NAO, AO, PNA, ENSO.
The position is placed within the core research groups on Arctic climate
and climate modelling at the G.C. Rieber Climate Institute at NERSC
headed by Prof. Helge Drange and in collaboration with other scientists
working at NERSC and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. These
centers are well suited for studies of climate processes in a broad
sense and last century variability in the Arctic in particular, with
access to a suite of relevant comprehensive multivariate data sets and
advanced analysis techniques. Also output fields from coupled climate
model integrations focusing on the Arctic are available. The groups have
extensive national and international networks.
Applicants must have an MSc degree (or equivalent) in natural sciences,
e.g. oceanography, meteorology, applied mathematics, physics or
statistics and be qualified for entrance to a Ph.D. programme at
University of Bergen (or equivalent). Applicants with documented
experience in oceanography/meteorology or multivariate time series
analysis will be preferred. As the candidate is expected to work within
a research team, strong collaborative skills are important. The
candidate is expected to publish his/her research in established
international scientific journals.
The institute offers salary in accord with the rates set by the Research
Council of Norway.
