A three-year postdoctoral position is available immediately as part of a
project to study the Arctic aerosol and chemistry. Support for this
position will be provided by a new three year grant from the Canadian
Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences (CFCAS) entitled
"Application of a 3-D Multiscale Model to Arctic Air Quality Issues:
Ozone and Mercury Depletion, Arctic Haze, and Intercontinental
Transport".
The applicant will be expected to contribute to group efforts to a
better understanding of the Arctic gas and particle chemistry by using
and augmenting an existing 3-D air-quality model (GEM/AQ), focusing
specifically on the application for Arctic regions. In this capacity the
applicant will need to demonstrate that he/she has a thorough
understanding of atmospheric gas phase and aerosol chemistry and
physics, in addition to performance of a large-scale transport model.
It is expected that the applicant will take the lead on initiating
prognostic studies of gas and aerosol chemistry that are related to the
Arctic tropospheric phenomena such as the Arctic haze, ozone and mercury
depletions. The specific task will involve implementing new modules
involving heterogeneous aerosol chemistry, snow-pack and ice-phase
chemistry and expanded gas phase chemistry in the Canadian GEM/AQ to
investigate the influences of various aerosols and snow/ice surfaces on
the Arctic atmospheric chemistry. The applicant will also be expected to
interact with project-supported graduate students and other faculty
members on a variety of other Arctic air quality related topics.
Preference will be given to applicants with previous modeling experience
of atmospheric chemistry and aerosols and/or in running and modifying
large scale global transport models.
