BACKGROUND
The Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) is an initiative of the
International Arctic Science Committee (IASC). The purpose of the summit
is to provide coordination opportunities, collaboration and cooperation
in all areas of Arctic science, and to combine science and management
meetings to save on travel and time. The ASSW also offers insight into
Arctic research undertaken by the host country. The event is, at this
time, organized in relation to the Icelandic Chairmanship of the Arctic
Council, which has placed Arctic research cooperation at the heart of
its chairmanship programme.

SUMMIT SPECIFICS
The sixth ASSW will be held in Reykjavik on 21-28 April 2004 at the
Nordica Hotel, which is located within walking distance to the city
center and close to the Laugardalur recreation area.

The theme for the ASSW 2004 is "Sustainable Development in the Arctic."
Approximately 200 scientists and members of different polar
organizations are expected to participate. The organizing committee's
task is to offer these scientists and organizations a venue for their
annual meeting, make the summit of high scientific standard and,
hopefully, a time to remember. During the week, two main joint events
will be organized: science day and project day.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Saturday, 24 April is the science day. The overarching theme of this
joint session will be "Adaptation to Climate Change." Leading scientists
and prominent speakers will be invited to give lectures on different
topics. The aim is to address the theme from various fields of science,
for example, sociology, humanities, and natural science. Detailed
information on speakers and topics will be announced on the website soon.

Sunday, 25 April is the project day, which is dedicated to three events:
(1) Arctic Climate Impact Assessment - ACIA
(2) Second International Conference for Arctic Research Planning 2005 -
ICARP II
(3) International Polar Year 2007 - IPY.

In addition to the joint events, all participants are invited to a
reception (icebreaker) on Wednesday, 21 April. A conference banquet will
be organized on Thursday, 22 April at the Perlan restaurant. Daily
excursions from Reykjavik will also be provided for participants.

REGISTRATION
If you plan on attending this event, please register as soon as possible
since the conference organizer cannot guarantee accommodation after
