The Arctic Centre at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands is
accepting applications for a 4-year PhD student position in archaeology
as part of the IPY Large Scale Historical Industrial Exploitation of
Polar Areas (LASHIPA) Project. The research will focus on the
exploitation of natural resources by European whalers and Russian
trappers as well as their cross-cultural contacts in the seventeenth and
eighteenth century in Spitsbergen (Svalbard).
The Arctic Centre specializes in polar research under the research
disciplines of archaeology, history, geography, and biology in and
concerning the polar areas. The Arctic Centre works mostly within the
framework of international research projects and also offers
under/graduate courses in Arctic Studies.
