The Department of Physics at University of Otago announces an IPY PhD
student opportunity to winter-over (August-October 2008 and
January-October 2009) at the New Zealand base in Antarctica working with
a field assistant and postdoctoral fellow conducting measurements on
the sea ice cover and the ocean beneath. The project will gather
information on the interaction between the ice shelf, ocean, and sea
ice. Data collected will form the basis of the PhD study, with scope for
modeling and analysis to match the skills of the successful candidate.
Applicants must hold a BSc (Honors) or MSc (or equivalent) in physics,
engineering, mathematics, oceanography or a related discipline.
All expenses associated with the project, including travel to and
accommodation in Antarctica, are funded by Foundation for Research
Science and Technology, New Zealand. The successful candidate is
expected to cover living expenses and fees, either by separate
application for a PhD scholarship through the University of Otago
(deadline Thursday, 1 November 2007) or from some other source. The
University of Otago scholarships are open to international applicants.
