Organizers of the 2008 Sea Ice Outlook announce a community meeting,
"Sea Ice Outlook: What We Learned from 2008 and Future Plans," to be
held during the American Geophysical Union (AGU) fall meeting,
Wednesday, 17 December 2008, in San Francisco, California. The meeting
will take place in the ARCUS Community Meeting Room at the San Francisco
Marriott, Pacific Room A, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Discussion at this
community meeting will focus on lessons learned from the 2008 Outlook
and planning for a 2009 Sea Ice Outlook. Anyone interested is encouraged
to attend.
The SEARCH Sea Ice Outlook began as an international effort to provide
an integrated, community-wide summary of the state of arctic sea ice
over the 2008 summer season. Each month, a report on the expected state
of the 2008 arctic sea ice extent was released, based on solicitations
from the science community. The effort provided the community with an
opportunity to explore links between sea ice and meteorological
conditions and acted as a forum for community synthesis, providing an
important first step toward better understanding arctic sea ice loss.
The 2008 Outlook underscored important lessons for improvements in
future efforts, including: a need for additional work on remote sensing
of spring and summer sea ice conditions, sea ice thickness data, and
more formal forecasting and evaluation methods.
The "Sea Ice Outlook: What We Learned from 2008 and Future Plans"
meeting at AGU will provide an opportunity for the science community to
add their perspective to what we learned from the 2008 Sea Ice Outlook,
to offer suggestions for improvement for the 2009 Sea Ice Outlook, and
to participate in the effort as a whole. The meeting is open, and anyone
interested in the Sea Ice Outlook effort is encouraged to attend. Light
refreshments will be available.
