Applications are now being accepted, from motivated junior-year geology
students, for the Svalbard Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
Project. The Svalbard REU Project offers exciting opportunities for
undergraduate students to participate in polar science research projects
on the arctic archipelago of Svalbard, Norway, during the International
Polar Year. The program will run from approximately 11 July to 20 August
2009. For further information, please go to:
http://www.mtholyoke.edu/go/svalbard.

In 2009, the Project is documenting processes at glacier fronts as they
enter the sea, including glacial, fluvial and marine systems, in order
to interpret responses of these glaciers to past and future climate
changes. Accepted students will be expected to complete their projects
at their home institution during their senior year. A strong and
enthusiastic commitment from a faculty advisor/mentor, who will work
with you after your summer on Svalbard, is critical to the application
package. Students from under-represented minority groups are
particularly encouraged to apply. The National Science Foundation (NSF)
requires participating students to be U.S. citizens or permanent
residents.

Students selected for the Svalbard REU Project will have all of their
expenses paid (air fare, room/board, and research costs) and will
receive a summer stipend. To apply, please complete the online
application form. Applications must include faculty recommendations, a
letter of endorsement from a faculty mentor, and university transcripts.
Complete applications must be received by Thursday, 15 January 2009. All
application details can be found online at:
http://www.mtholyoke.edu/go/svalbard.

The Svalbard REU is supported by Arctic Natural Sciences Division of NSF
(Award Number 0649006).
