Applications are invited for 1-2 graduate positions for research
projects assessing habitat manipulation of lake-and-stream ecosystems in
the Lac de Gras region, 300km NE of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories,
Canada. Two related projects are designed to (a) improve access by fish
(e.g., arctic grayling) to small headwater lakes via their outlet
stream(s), (b) create stream habitat for macroinvertebrates and spawning
and nursery habitat for fish, and (c) assess effects of increased
connectivity on native lake communities. The ecological investigations
will interface with a parallel hydraulics study and related
environmental monitoring, and with both an industrial partner and
government (DFO) biologists.
While PhD students are particularly sought, well-qualified MSc
applicants will also be considered. Candidates must meet the following
requirements:
- MSc or BSc in zoology, ecology, fisheries, or related field (degree
must be complete by spring 2009),
- Field experience with lakes and/or streams,
- Interest in northern freshwater ecosystems, and
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Fieldwork would commence in the summer (2009), with the graduate program
beginning in September. Support is guaranteed for 5 (PhD student) or
2.67 (MSc) years; qualified students would be eligible for an NSERC
Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship.
Interested students should send a cover letter, CV or resume, and
(unofficial) transcripts to:
