The Institute of Arctic Biology and the USGS Cooperative Fish and
Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Alaska Fairbanks invite
applications for a postdoctoral research associate to work in the field
of structured decision making and adaptive management. The postdoc will
collaborate on a project to develop optimal monitoring strategies and an
adaptive management framework for migratory waterbird habitat on
National Wildlife Refuge wetlands in regions 6 and 7. A primary focus of
the project is to evaluate the effect of climate variability on
scientist's ability to learn through the adaptive management process.
Activities will include:
- Collaborating with refuge personnel, managers and researchers to
formulate objectives, management alternatives and conceptual models;
- Estimating temporal and spatial variance structure in a suite of
putative climate driven habitat metrics (e.g., lake drying, river flow,
flooding frequencies);
- Evaluating the implications of the variance in climate-driven habitat
trends for optimal monitoring strategies and subsequent design of
adaptive management programs; and
- Preparing peer-reviewed manuscripts and presentations to disseminate
results to collaborating refuges, managers, and the scientific
community.
Desirable qualifications include experience in structured decision
making, and adaptive management or design of optimal monitoring
programs. Knowledge of waterfowl and wetland ecosystems would be
valuable. Experience communicating scientific results to natural
resource management agencies and in peer-reviewed literature is
preferred.
To be considered for the position, applicants must meet the following
qualifications:
- PhD degree in quantitative ecology, wildlife biology, statistics or
related discipline;
- Experience in demographic modeling, optimization methods (e.g.,
stochastic dynamic programming) or quantitative ecology; and
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Apply online at: http://www.uakjobs.com. Attach a cover letter,
statement of research interests, transcripts (may be unofficial), CV,
and name and contact information (address, phone number, and email) for
three professional references. Review of applications will begin
Wednesday, 1 April 2009. The position is open until filled.
