The University of Sheffield Department of Plant and Animal Sciences
announces a 3 year PhD fellowship sponsored by the European Union (EU)
as part of a Marie Curie Initial Training Network.
The candidate will contribute to a project that aims to understand the
impacts of acute nitric acid deposition events on plants of the High
Arctic and also determine the importance of stratospheric sources of
nitrogen (N) for arctic vegetation. Using field plots to simulate these
N inputs, attention will be paid to quantifying plant growth responses,
changes in productivity and diversity. The project is part of a larger
consortium (NSINK: see
http://www.nsinkproject.group.shef.ac.uk/NSINK/Home.html).
This fellowship provides an exciting opportunity to undertake field work
in the Norwegian High Arctic on Svalbard, including periods of two to
three months each year of summer field work. The project would suit a
highly motivated, independent thinking student with a background
in/enthusiasm for plant ecology/biology and global change.
This PhD fellowship is part of an EU Marie Curie Initial Training
Network, so applicants should be from outside the UK. Applicants should
have a degree that would allow them to start PhD study in their own
country (usually a masters degree). Candidates with a PhD are not
eligible. The successful candidate will be employed by the university
during the fellowship and will have the opportunity to work towards the
qualification of PhD. The post has a suggested start date of 28 Sept
2009, but an earlier or later start may be possible.
