The National Research Council's Board on Atmospheric Sciences and
Climate (BASC) announces a call for abstracts for Session GC15, "30
Years of Progress: Advancements in Climate Change Projections Since the
1979 Charney Report." The session will be convened at the American
Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, 14-18 December 2009, in San
Francisco, California.
This session will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the renowned
Charney Report ("Carbon Dioxide and Climate: A Scientific Assessment,"
NRC 1979). The Charney Report was one of the first climate change
assessments designed for policy makers. Its findings, especially its
estimate of climate sensitivity, have proven remarkably accurate over
the past three decades. Furthermore, many key questions and issues
raised in the report are still being studied today.
The session will likely include a panel discussion with original members
of the Charney Committee, invited presentations from Charney students,
and contributed talks continuing this tradition of research. It will
highlight the robustness of climate science and ongoing research on
climate change projections, with emphasis on progress made over the past
three decades.
Organizers seek submissions on scientific research that strengthens our
understanding of future projections of climate change. Presentations
should focus on one or more of the still-relevant climate challenges
such as climate sensitivity, understanding of the physical mechanisms
and feedbacks in the climate system, and key remaining uncertainties in
projections of future climate states.
The abstract submission deadline for this and all other sessions is
Thursday, 3 September 2009, at 11:59 pm Eastern Daylight Time. To submit
an abstract, you must enter the first author's current AGU member ID and
password at: http://agu-fm09.abstractcentral.com/.
