Bering Sea Sub Network seeks Survey Manager

The Bering Sea Sub Network (BSSN) seeks a postdoctoral social scientist
for the position of Survey Manager. The position is full time and based
in Anchorage, Alaska.

BSSN is a formalized international network of coastal communities
devised to gather and record observations regarding Bering Sea marine
resources and environmental changes in and around the Bering Sea.
Started in 2007, BSSN currently has 6 member-communities. In Phase II,
which will take place from September 2009 to approximately August 2014,
BSSN will be expanded to include 4 more Alaskan villages. For more

The successful applicant will be responsible for data management and
processing and will become part of a team working with rural communities
in Alaska and Russia, as well as researchers, indigenous organizations,
and community partners to implement and manage surveys. The BSSN Survey
Manager will also be involved in other aspects of the project including:

- Data system and interface design;
- Data archival processes and management;
- Statistical methods;
- Travel to arctic communities in Alaska and Russia, and national
and international meetings to work with BSSN partners; and
- Collaborative, creative, and iterative work with data providers
and users to accomplish the BSSN mission.

In addition to work on BSSN, the successful applicant will have
opportunities to engage with other diverse projects occurring within the
Resilience and Adaptive Management (RAM) Group at the University of
Alaska and the Aleut International Association and will receive support
from a RAM Group mentor.

Applicants must have completed a PhD in the quantitative social sciences
by the time of hire, and those with multi- or inter- disciplinary skills
are highly encouraged to apply. Knowledge of data management and data
presentation is also important. Applicants who are fluent or competent
in spoken and written Russian are preferred. Experience working with
local and traditional knowledge and/or indigenous communities is an
asset, as is knowledge of the Arctic. Competency with SPSS and NVivo
software is required and experience with open source statistical
software (e.g., R and RQDA) and with web design is a major asset.

The Bering Sea Sub Network (BSSN) seeks a Project Assistant. The
position is full time and based in Anchorage, Alaska.

The successful applicant will be responsible for communication between
team members and coordination of activities in BSSN communities and will
become part of a team working with rural communities in Alaska and
Russia, as well as researchers, indigenous organizations, and community
partners to implement and manage surveys.

Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of research project experience
in Alaska Native communities and the ability to work in multi-cultural
environment. A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is preferred, as
are applicants who are fluent or competent in spoken and written
Russian. Experience working with local and traditional knowledge and/or
indigenous communities is helpful. Competency with web design and
publishing is an asset.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seeks Anthropologist

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Office of Subsistence
Management, Anthropology Division, is seeking a cultural anthropologist.
The position will be based in Anchorage, Alaska.

The successful applicant will analyze proposals for changes to
subsistence regulations; compile, evaluate, and synthesize sociocultural
and subsistence use information for regulatory reviews and
determinations; assess near-term and long-range information needs; and
design anthropological subsistence use and/or sociocultural studies to
collect new data to meet requirements. The position provides strategic
direction, oversight, and leadership for the social science component of
the wildlife 809 agreements and the Monitoring Program.

Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology seeks Sea Ice Researcher
Hamburg, Germany

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) seeks applicants for a
PhD position in sea ice research to work with their "Sea Ice in the
Earth System" research group. The position, initially offered for three
years, is based in Hamburg, Germany and will start as soon as possible.

MPI-M is a multidisciplinary center for climate and earth system
research. The group develops implements, and uses a next-generation
sea-ice model, for climate studies and conceptual studies of sea ice.
Field and laboratory experiments focus on developing new measuring
techniques to better understand the physical properties of sea ice. The

The successful applicant will evaluate new parameterizations of
air-ice-sea interaction from theoretical and experimental studies.
Possible research topics include, but are not limited to, the summer
melt cycle, the frazil-pancake cycle, and the modeling of snow on sea
ice.

A background in physics, mathematics, geophysics, or a related subject
is required. Some prior knowledge of sea-ice physics is of advantage.
