The Princeton University Art Museum announces an art exhibition entitled
"Gifts from the Ancestors: Ancient Ivories of Bering Strait." The
exhibition will be on display at the museum in Princeton, New Jersey,
from Saturday, 3 October 2009 to 10 January 2010.
"Gifts from the Ancestors" brings together ancient ivories masterfully
carved by peoples from the coasts of Chukotka, western Alaska, and the
islands in between. Approximately 200 objects will be included from over
twenty institutions and private collections, including rare examples
from recent Russian excavations at Ekven, Chukotka, which are exhibited
for the first time in North America. The exhibition, catalogue, and Web
site explore the historical, cultural, and archaeological significance
of the ivories as well as issues related to their appreciation today by
indigenous communities, museums, archaeologists, artists, and
participants in the art market.
In conjunction with Gifts from the Ancestors, an exhibition of works by
contemporary Alaskan artists entitled "DRY ICE: Alaska Native Artists
and the Landscape" will open on Thursday, 1 October 2009, at the Arts

social impact in the Bering Strait region. William F. Fitzhugh,

- International Colloquium - Climate Change in Magellan and
Antarctic Regions: Evidence and Challenge for the Future
27-31 October 2009
Punta Arenas, Chile
The organizing committee announces an international colloquium entitled
"Climate Change in Magellan and Antarctic Regions: Evidence and
Challenge for the Future." The conference will be held at the University
of Magellan in Punta Arenas, Chile, 27-31 October 2009.
Climate change and its effects have attained global awareness and are of

dramatic regional climate changes in recent times. The colloquium will
gather a group of national and international experts, and is open to
local and national authorities, the scientific and academic communities,
students, scholars, decision makers, and all others interested in
attending.
The colloquium is a joint project between the University of Magellan
(UMAG) and the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH). Funding has been
provided by the regional division of the National Commission for Science
