  1. Congressional Briefing
    Thursday, 24 September 2009
    Washington, D.C.

A science briefing for policymakers, entitled "Out on a Limb:
Sustainability of Urban Ecosystems Under Changing Climates," will be
held at 9:30 a.m. EDT on Thursday, 24 September 2009 in room 2456 of the
Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C. This science briefing
is part of the Association of Ecosystem Research Centers (AERC) annual
meeting in Washington, D.C.

Cities around the nation are bracing for the impacts of climate change.
From sea level rise in coastal states to drought in the West, water
quality and availability will be at the forefront of policy decisions in
the coming century. The implications of climate change for urban
infrastructure will require decision makers to utilize new planning
tools and to consider human systems in the larger context of the natural
environment.

At the briefing, nationally renowned scientists will discuss the impacts
of climate change on urban infrastructure and water resources, as well
as ecosystem approaches for adaptation. Case studies from Baltimore,
Chicago, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Phoenix will be presented.
Anticipated speakers are Donald Boesch and Allen Davis, University of
Maryland; Douglas Farr, Farr Associates; Nancy Grimm, Arizona State
University; and Peter Groffman, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies.
