The Ice Service prepares high-resolution sea ice charts for the Arctic

medium-range forecasting. The ideal candidate will welcome the challenge
of having their results evaluated on a day-to-day basis. The development
work will take place within the operational ice charting environment of
VNN, in cooperation with the Research and Development division in Oslo,
Norway. The work will also be based on close cooperation with other
national and international institutions.
Responsibilities will include:
- Development of methodology for combined use of sea ice analysis
and ice models for operational forecasting;
- Participation in projects with national and international
partners; and
- Other tasks assigned by superiors.
Qualification Requirements:
- Higher education at university level (preferably PhD, but
Bachelor's or Master's with relevant experience will be considered)
in oceanography/meteorology, mathematics, or computer science;
- Experience working in a Linux environment;
- Documented computer-programming experience in FORTRAN;
- Documented experience in the use of numerical models; and
- Proven knowledge of data assimilation methods in modeling work.
Knowledge of and experience with sea ice models (CICE, TOPAZ, etc.) would
be a distinct advantage, and experience with validation of model results
(statistical or otherwise) is desirable. Knowledge of and experience
with C and C++ would also be an asset, as would solid teamwork skills
and experience of writing proposals for, and obtaining, research grants.
