The Environmental Science Department at Alaska Pacific University (APU)
is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Professor of
Earth Science. The position will be based in Anchorage, Alaska.

The position resides within the interdisciplinary Department of
Environmental Science, and the primary responsibility of this position
is teaching undergraduates and Masters-level students in the new Earth
Science major. APU is a small teaching-oriented institution with a focus
on active learning. The successful applicant will utilize a combination
of labs, lectures, field courses, research projects, and other
innovative techniques to teach introductory courses in the physical and
earth sciences as well as advanced courses in the candidate's specialty.

APU welcomes applications from candidates in a variety of sub
disciplines, including geology, hydrology, geophysics, oceanography, and
atmospheric sciences. Duties also include advising a diverse student
population of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing research in
the earth sciences. The successful applicant will demonstrate an
eagerness to work outside their specialty in this interdisciplinary
environment.

Qualifications include a doctorate in earth science or closely related
field, a record of successful college teaching experience, and the
ability to work collegially in a small university setting. Applicants
should demonstrate enthusiasm for Alaskan landscapes and issues and have
the ability to incorporate these into an active educational program. To

  1. Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research Program seeks Summer Field
    Assistants for 2010
    Toolik Field Station, northern Alaska

The Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program seeks
applications from motivated persons who will help support ongoing
ecological research projects located at the Toolik Field Station in
northern Alaska. Information about the Arctic LTER project is available

positions are term appointments limited to the summer of 2010. More than
one position is available, as follows:

- Summer Field Assistant: The successful candidate will participate
in research on arctic tundra stream ecosystems in the Toolik Field
Station research area. Duties include monitoring physical parameters
in streams and collection and analysis of water samples, benthic
samples, and juvenile and adult fish. Basic laboratory skills,
familiarity with spreadsheet software, and some knowledge of stream
ecosystems preferred.

- Summer Project Manager: The successful candidate will manage the
streams component of a collaborative project to assess the impacts
of a large tundra fire on arctic tundra river ecosystems in the
Toolik Field Station research area. Duties include monitoring
physical parameters in streams and collection and analysis of water
samples, benthic samples, and juvenile and adult fish. Basic
laboratory skills, familiarity with spreadsheet software, and some
knowledge of stream ecosystems is essential. Prior experience in
project and logistical management for fieldwork in remote areas
would be highly desirable.

- Undergraduate (REU) Scholar: The successful candidate will
participate in research on arctic tundra stream ecosystems in the
Toolik Field Station research area. REU scholars will work closely
with a senior mentor to identify a personal research project that
advances the scholar's knowledge of stream ecology, hydrology,
and/or biogeochemistry in the Arctic and contributes to the overall
goals of the Arctic LTER Streams research program. REU scholars
will continue to interact with their mentor after the summer field
experience and are expected to produce a final report on their
research project by 31 December 2010.

Applicants for the Summer Field Assistant and Project Manager positions
should be recent college graduates (BS or MS) with substantial course
work and/or field experience in environmental sciences. Some background
in aquatic ecology, hydrology, chemistry, fish ecology, and/or
ecosystems ecology preferred. Applicants for the Undergraduate (REU)
Scholar position may come from any field related to environmental
sciences. The ideal candidate will be a returning senior student who
has completed basic courses in biology, chemistry, math, and statistics
and may have completed courses in general ecology, physics,
biogeochemistry, hydrology, or related disciplines.

Applicants to all positions should be in good health, capable of
rigorous outdoor activity, and prepared to live in a field camp where
cooperation with others is essential, personal privacy is limited, and
living accommodations are spare and simple. Maturity and self-motivation
are essential. Wilderness or outdoor experience is highly desirable.

Candidates for these jobs should be available to live at the Toolik
Field Station for 2-3 months during June, July, and August. Travel to
Toolik Field Station will be paid as well as the cost of room and board
at the station. Successful candidates will be offered an hourly wage or
seasonal stipend commensurate with their level of experience.
