The National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for
Undergraduates (REU) site at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF),
the Geophysical Institute (GI), will support six undergraduate students
to participate in the research activities of faculty members in the
field of Atmospheric Sciences. These opportunities are available during
the 2010 summer session, for ten weeks between Tuesday, 1 June and
Friday, 13 August.
The following research themes will be considered, for which two teams of
three REU students will be formed:
- Boundary layer research and effect of aerosols in the marine
boundary layer clouds during VOCALS-REx (team advisor, Javier
Fochesatto).
- Theoretical and numerical investigations of strongly stable
conditions over interior Alaska during wintertime (team advisors,
Nicole Molders and Gerhard Kramm).
Undergraduates with skills in atmospheric sciences, physics, mathematics
(calculus, linear algebra, and statistics), and related natural science
fields are preferred. The NSF REU site program will provide for each
student a stipend of $5,000.00, a housing allowance of up to $1,000.00,
and a traveling allowance of up to $1,000.00. On-campus housing is
highly recommended.
