  1. Nansen Center seeks PhD Candidate
    Satellite Remote Sensing of Cryosphere
    Bergen, Norway

The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center has a vacant PhD
position in satellite remote sensing of the cryosphere. The position
will be based in Bergen, Norway.

The position will focus on development of methodology for use of
CryoSat-2 radar altimeter data for arctic land and sea ice studies.
Furthermore, the PhD work will include analysis of CryoSat-2 data in
combination with other satellite data such as SAR to study sea ice
volume and fluxes in the Arctic. The PhD candidate will have the
opportunity to spend some of the time at the Nansen Center's office in
the Science Park in Longyearbyen, Norway. The work includes cooperation
with the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), the Alfred Wegener
Institute, and other polar research institutes.

The candidate should have relevant background in oceanography,
meteorology, sea ice, or glaciology. It is an advantage if applicants
have experience with satellite data, programming, data analysis or field
work in polar regions.

The position is open for three years and will start as soon as possible.
Applications, including attachments, should be sent by email to:

  1. University of Quebec seeks PhD Student
    Boreal Aquatic Ecology
    Chicoutimi, Saguenay, Quebec

The University of Quebec at Chicoutimi has a 3-4 year PhD position
available as part of a Canada Research Chair program on boreal aquatic
ecology. The position is based in Chicoutimi, Saguenay, Quebec.

The successful candidate will carry out research in lakes ranging from
boreal (Lake Simoncouche, Quebec) to low (Northern Quebec) and high
arctic (Lake Saanajarvi, Finland). Specifically, the PhD project will
evaluate the seasonality of copepod carotenoid pigments and their
correlation with water column ultraviolet radiation, available food, and
development of the copepods. A substantial part of the research will be
carried out in winter, a season often neglected in lake research. The
research methods will harness the use of advanced ecosystem monitoring
techniques. The fieldwork has been planned to start in spring 2011.

Applicants should have a Master's degree in biology, limnology,
environmental sciences, or a closely related subject. Knowledge of
French is advantageous but not obligatory. As part of the fieldwork will
be carried out in northern Finland
(http://www.helsinki.fi/kilpis/english/index.htm), there are
opportunities for spending a period as a visiting graduate student at
University of Jyvaskyla, Finland (https://www.jyu.fi/bioenv/en/).

To apply, please submit a curriculum vitae, short statement of research
interest, and names of two referees to Milla Rautio
(milla.rautio [at] uqac.ca). The position will remain open until a suitable
candidate has been found.
