Polar Field Services (PFS) has an opportunity for a skilled Project
Manager to join their Alaska operations, providing science and logistics
support to Barrow and North Slope based research projects. The position
is full-time and will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska, with approximately
half-time being spent in Barrow, Alaska.
The successful candidate will possess a strong project management
background with demonstrated experience in working with diverse groups
of people, and have excellent relationship building skills. The ability
to work closely with a diverse group of key stakeholders and vendors is
a must. Experience working in science support, field research, or
National Science Foundation (NSF) polar programs; as well as experience
in and knowledge of outdoor wilderness activities such as camping or
backpacking is highly desirable.
The preferred candidate will possess:
- Experience with project coordination, keeping both yourself and
others on track;
- Proven organizational and follow through skills;
- Solid computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite;
- Excellent communication (written, verbal, and phone) and
interpersonal skills;
- An ability to work well both in a team environment and
independently;
- Experience in science support and or field research; and
- Experience in and knowledge of outdoor wilderness activities.
A Bachelor's degree in a related field and demonstrated experience in
any or all of these areas is required: project management, remote field
operations, science support, or field science.
The Barrow Project Manager will be responsible for planning,
coordination, and communication of Barrow and North Slope based research
projects. This includes, but is not limited to, the oversight of all
aspects of project planning and working in conjunction with the other
PFS project manager (team of two). The position requires working closely
with local organizations to implement support; assisting in the
technical management of the BTS subcontract; coordinating closely with a
wide range of remote office and field sites; and working in a culturally
rich, challenging environment.
The ideal applicant will be familiar with northern research
requirements--experience working in remote communities like Barrow is a
plus. The applicant must value working in a team setting. This is not a
field position but does require an ability to travel to small remote
field sites, to an annual Denver meeting, and to science meetings, as
appropriate. This position may require occasional assistance with
fieldwork, which can include tent camping, rustic facilities, and
lifting of loads up to 40 pounds.
