    ICASS VII: Circumpolar Perspectives in Global Dialogue: Social
    Sciences Beyond the IPY

The Seventh International Congress of Arctic Social Sciences (ICASS
VII), to take place in Akureyri, Iceland, June 22-26, 2011, announces a
call for individual paper and poster proposals. A special paper and
poster abstract submittal form together with a more complete list of
sessions and themes can be found at the International Arctic Social
Sciences Association (IASSA) website: http://iassa.org/icass-vii.

Paper and poster proposals should contain:

- Title;
- Name and full contact details of the author(s);
- Abstract: A 250 words (max) summary; and
- An indication of which session the paper should ideally be
presented in (see list of themes and preliminary list of sessions at
http://www.iassa.org/programme). If the paper is already invited by
a session leader, please indicate this. We strongly suggest that you
provide more than one preferred placement for your presentation.

ICASS is held every three years and is a congress of the International
Arctic Social Sciences put on by IASSA. The Congress will be hosted by
the University of Akureyri, the town of Akureyri and the Stefansson
Arctic Institute.

Abstract submission deadline: Monday, 20 December 2010.

    Past Global Changes 2013

PAGES (Past Global Changes) invites applications from groups interested
in hosting the 4th PAGES Open Science Meeting (OSM) and the associated
2nd Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) in 2013. The OSM and YSM are PAGES'
flagship events and are much anticipated fixtures on the paleoscience
calendar. Previous host venues have been London (OSM 1998), Beijing (OSM
2005) and Corvallis (OSM and YSM 2009).

Interested groups are requested to send a completed application form to
PAGES by Monday, 15 November 2010. The application form as well as
information on previous OSM/YSM meetings can be obtained at:
http://www.pages-osm.org/.

Guidelines for applicants:

- The meetings should be held in 2013, preferentially in the first
half of the year.
- Exact dates are open but should ideally be scheduled to promote
sufficient participation.
- The Young Scientists Meeting (YSM) will probably be 2 days long
and be followed by the Open Science Meeting (OSM) for 4 days.
- The expected number of participants at the YSM is 100, and at the
OSM is 300-500.
- It is also expected that a number of smaller workshops will take
place before and after the meetings or during the YSM.

    Workshop on Remote Sensing of the Coastal Zone

The European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL)
Symposium 2011 and the associated 5th Workshop on Remote Sensing of the
Coastal Zone will be held at the Czech Technical University in Prague,
Czech Republic. The EARSeL Symposium will be convened 30 May - 2 June
2011 and the Remote Sensing Workshop will be held 1-3 June 2011.

Organizers of a symposium entitled "Human-environmental interactions in
polar and subpolar landscapes" announce a call for papers. The symposium
will be convened at the 8th International Association of Landscape
Ecology (IALE) World Congress, scheduled for 18-23 August 2011 in
Beijing, China. The Congress' website is available at:

High latitude ecosystems are characterized by slow growth rates, high
seasonality, and rather low numbers of species and population. Several
of these areas are home to well-adapted Indigenous peoples whose
livelihoods are closely linked to their environment. Thus, effects of
global climatic change in the nature are expected to be significant.
Additional effects will originate from intensified or new forms of land
use and globalization. For example, sub-arctic and especially arctic
areas hold the world's largest untapped petroleum resources, which will
be taken into production in the coming decades. This will cause
significant alterations to the environment as well as to local cultures.

The symposium aims, on the one hand, to analyze human impacts on these
sensitive environments and, on the other hand, to depict human
dependencies on goods and services provided by the local ecosystems.
Analyses, models, qualitative assessments, and data related to effects,
potentials, and risks of different forms of human use (respective
non-use) and global climatic change in polar and subpolar landscapes
will be presented. Special attention will be paid to potential change
dynamics, resilience, and future scenarios at different spatial and
temporal scales. This will provide better insights into the complex
adaptive ecosystems and human-environmental relations and produce better
knowledge for a sustainable adaptive management of the polar and
subpolar environment and culture. The publication of the symposium's
outcomes in a Special Issue or a Theme Section in a relevant scientific
journal is planned.
