Mike Patterson has been Director of the US Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) Project Office located in Washington, DC, since January 2011. In this role, he is responsible for fostering scientific planning and programmatic coordination across US funding agencies of research activities to advance understanding and prediction of climate variability and change with emphasis on the role of the ocean and its interaction with other elements of the Earth system. Over the past two decades, Mike has worked to implement US agency climate and global change research programs, having served as interim program director at the National Science Foundation, Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences Division, assisting in the management of the solicitation for eecadal and regional prediction using Earth system models, and as program manager at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Global Programs and Climate Program Office, managing programs to advance understanding and prediction of climate variability in the Pan-American and Pacific regions, coordinating the NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoc Program, and providing program analysis for the earlier years of the US Global Change Research Program. Mr. Patterson holds a BS in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Missouri.
