1. Assistant, Associate, and Senior Scientist Positions Available
Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry Department
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institue
Woods Hole, Massachusetts
The Chemistry and Geochemistry Department (MC&G) at the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites applications for Assistant,
Associate, and Tenure Track Senior Scientist positions. Candidates at
the junior level will receive an initial appointment of four years. All
positions are based in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
The successful candidate will help to complement and expand existing
programs on the chemistry of the ocean and its interactions with the
Earth as a whole. Areas of focus of the MC&G department include:
biogeochemistry and organic geochemistry, microbial ecology and
molecular biology, carbon, nutrient, and trace element cycling, air-sea
exchange, coastal, estuarine, wetland and river chemistry, sediment
geochemistry, fluid-rock interactions, igneous geochemistry, and isotope
systematics. MC&G scientific staff conducts research throughout the
world's open-ocean, deep-sea, and coastal environments, develops sensors
for in-situ measurements, analyzes samples in the laboratory using
state-of-the-art analytical techniques, carries out laboratory-based
experimental studies, and applies computer models and remote sensing
techniques. Candidates in all of the core areas described above are
welcome to apply, but WHOI is particularly interested in applicants who
conduct research on ocean water column geochemistry-biogeochemistry as
well as marine benthic-water column interactions.
Applicants should have a doctoral degree and a record of scientific
research publications in scholarly journals. Postdoctoral experience is
beneficial but not required. Scientific Staff members are expected to
develop independent, externally funded, and internationally recognized
research programs. They also have the option of advising graduate
students and teaching courses through the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT)/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography and Oceanographic
Engineering. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research exist through
collaborations with colleagues in the other science departments,
centers, and labs at WHOI. Members of WHOI's Scientific Staff are
expected to provide for their salaries from grants and contracts, but
the Institution provides salary support when no other funding is
available, as well as significant internal funding opportunities for
developing innovative research projects. Candidates hired at the junior
level will receive an initial appointment for four years with salary
guaranteed. Women and minority applicants are particularly encouraged to
apply.
Application reviews began: 15 January 2016.
Applications should be sent as a single pdf document and include a cover
letter, curriculum vitae, a three-page research statement that clearly
describes research interests, names and contact information for four
references, and copies of up to three relevant publications. The package
should also be sent separately to the chair of the Marine Chemistry and
Geochemistry Department at: chem-chair [at] whoi.edu.

2. Assistant, Associate, and Senior Scientist Positions Available
Biology Department
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute
Woods Hole, Massachusetts
The Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
(WHOI) invites applications for Assistant, Associate, and Tenure Track
Senior Scientist positions. Candidates at the junior level will receive
an initial appointment of four years. All positions are based in Woods
Hole, Massachusetts.
The successful candidate will complement the department's existing
interdisciplinary strengths in biology, biological oceanography, and
marine ecology. Candidates in all areas are welcome to apply, but WHOI
is particularly interested in applicants who conduct research in coastal
ecosystem processes and dynamics. Areas of expertise can encompass any
aspect of marine biology, physiology, or ecology, and would ideally
focus on both characterizing long-term forcing on the coastal ecosystem
and understanding/predicting the biological response. WHOI seeks to hire
at the Assistant Scientist level, but exceptionally well qualified
candidates at other levels also will be considered.
Applicants should have a doctoral degree, postdoctoral experience, and a
record of scientific research publications in scholarly journals. WHOI
scientific staff members are expected to develop an internationally
recognized and externally funded research program. They have the
opportunity to advise graduate students and teach courses in the
MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography and Oceanographic Engineering.
Opportunities for interdisciplinary research exist through collaboration
with the other WHOI science departments, WHOI's Marine Policy Center,
and the WHOI Ocean Institutes, as well as with researchers in the
broader Woods Hole scientific community. Members of the WHOI's
Scientific Staff are expected to provide for their salaries from grants
and contracts, but the Institution provides salary support when no other
funding is available as well as significant internal funding for
developing innovative research. Candidates hired at the junior level
will receive an initial appointment for four years with salary
guaranteed. Female and minority applicants are particularly encouraged
to apply.
