- University of Tromso seeks Applicants
PhD and Postdoctoral Positions
Marine Night Project
Tromso, Norway
The University of Tromso seeks applicants for two positions in the
Marine Night Project. The PhD position is for four years. The
postdoctoral research fellowship is a fixed term position for three
years. Both positions are based in Tromso, Norway.
PhD Position:
One objective of the Marine Night project is to research the growth,
distribution and ecology of blue mussels on Svalbard. Blue mussels have
been common on Svalbard in previous warmer periods following the last
glaciation. Living blue mussels have recently been recorded on the
western coast of Svalbard and their reappearance has been seen as a
direct result of the current changes in climate both locally and
globally. The successful PhD candidate will work with the oceanographic
and biologic factors that regulate the distribution, growth, and
reproduction of these blue mussels.
The candidate should have a Master's degree or equivalent in marine
ecology or other relevant topics. Field experience and certified diving
competence is preferred.
Postdoctoral Research Fellowship position:
Another objective of the Marine Night project is to map and characterize
the processes that govern the marine environment during the Arctic polar
night. Most of the fieldwork will be near Svalbard. The project is based
upon recent discoveries made by the project participants including diel
vertical migration of zooplankton, recruitment of benthic organisms, and
the importance of bioluminescence during the polar night. The successful
candidate will be responsible for the case-studies outlined in the
Marine Night project, but there will also be room for development and
implementation of ideas based on the candidate's scientific background
and special competence.
The successful candidate must have a PhD or equivalent within the field
of marine ecology with experience from polar regions. The applicant will
have documented abilities to plan and conduct experimental work, ability
to combine independent work with team-work, and relevant analytical
competence.
Applicants should submit a project proposal for the qualifying work that
includes a progress plan. It is required that the applicant will be able
to complete the project during the period of appointment. Applicant must
have a good command of English.
Application deadline for both positions: Monday, 9 September 2013.
