    Sea Ice Freeboard, Snow Depth, and Thickness Quick Look

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) announces the availability
of a new data product, 'Sea Ice Freeboard, Snow Depth, and Thickness
Quick Look.' It can be accessed online, at:
http://tinyurl.com/IDCSI2-QuickLook.

The data set is an evaluation product containing derived geophysical
data products retrieved over the arctic sea ice cover from 14 March to 2
April 2012, and 21 March to 25 April 2013, using the IceBridge Airborne
Topographic Mapper (ATM), Snow Radar, Digital Mapping System (DMS), and
KT19 pyrometer. This quick look product is experimental and is designed
to be applicable for time-sensitive projects such as sea ice
forecasting. The data were collected as part of Operation IceBridge
funded campaigns, are stored in ASCII text files, and are available via
FTP.

Within a few months, the quick-look product will be replaced by the
final product, available at: http://nsidc.org/data/idcsi2.html.

    Climate, Special Issue
    Sea Ice-Climate Feedbacks

The journal 'Climate' announces a call for submissions for a special
issue entitled "Sea Ice-Climate Feedbacks." Full research papers or
outstanding long reviews for peer-review and possible publication are
invited.

Incidents like U-boots surfacing and meeting at the North Pole, ships
using the East-North passage, and the break-off of the Larsen Ice Shelf
or other ice shelves alerted the public about changes in sea ice. Sea
ice is one of the hardest systems to model as it is affected by the
ocean and atmosphere. Furthermore, the sea ice extent changes strongly
in response to the atmosphere and ocean currents. Recent studies also
show links between sea-ice and vegetation. The goal of this special
issue is to discuss newest findings of the role of sea-ice in the
climate systems, its feedback to other parts of the climate system,
sea-ice processes as well as the climatology related to temporal and
spatial changes in sea-ice extend.

Submitted papers should not have been published previously, nor be under
consideration for publication elsewhere. This Special Issue will be
fully open access.

Submission deadline: Tuesday, 9 July 2013.

    Shipwreck at Cape Flora: The Expeditions of Benjamin Leigh Smith,
    England's Forgotten Arctic Explorer

University of Calgary Press announces the release of a new book.
Entitled "Shipwreck at Cape Flora: The Expeditions of Benjamin Leigh
Smith, England's Forgotten Arctic Explorer," the book was written by P.
J. Capelotti.

Benjamin Leigh Smith discovered and named dozens of islands in the
Arctic, yet refused public accolades and published no account of his
pioneering explorations. Traveling to the arctic islands that Leigh
Smith explored and crisscrossing England to find unpublished journals,
diaries, and photographs, archaeologist and writer P. J. Capelotti
details Leigh Smith's five major arctic expeditions and places them
within the context of the great polar explorations in the nineteenth
century.
