Third International Symposium of Arctic Research
14-17 January 2013
Tokyo, Japan
Organizers of the Third International Symposium of Arctic Research
(ISAR-3) announce a call for abstracts. The symposium will be held 14-17
January 2013 at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation
(Miraikan) in Tokyo, Japan.
The symposium is intended to detect and clarify the recent changes in
the arctic region, and to build understanding of the essential processes
behind them. The theme for ISAR-3 is "Detecting the Change in the Arctic
System and Searching the Global Influence. All colleagues, including
scientific and technical researchers, decision makers, and students are
welcome.
Participants wishing to present an oral/poster presentation are
requested to submit an abstract of no more than one page of text (500
words maximum, PDF file). Notification of acceptance will be made to
participants by the middle of October.
Abstract submission deadline: Saturday, 15 September 2012.

- Session Announcement and Call for Abstracts
Biotracers, Mineralogical, and Geochemical Properties of
Circum-Arctic Sediment Sources and Runoff Towards the Arctic Ocean
Geological Society of America Annual Meeting
4-7 November 2012
Charlotte, North Carolina
Organizers of a session entitled "Biotracers, Mineralogical, and
Geochemical Properties of Circum-Arctic Sediment Sources and Runoff
Towards the Arctic Ocean" announce a call for abstracts. The session
will be convened at the 2012 Geological Society of America Annual
Meeting, scheduled for 4-7 November 2012 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
A large community is presently planning drill holes in the Arctic Ocean,
notably through proposals to the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, in
order to build on the Arctic Coring Expedition results and set up a
robust geological history of this basin. One critical issue will be to
properly link the detrital sediments of drilled holes to circum-arctic
sources through time, using mineralogical and geochemical (elemental and
isotopic) tracers as well as biotracers.
The session is intended to bring together paleoceanographers and
geologists working in the circum-arctic for a better identification of
sedimentary and geochemical sources feeding into the Arctic Ocean
through time, and of their linkage with continental (glacial) climate
history and erosional regimes. Geoscientists with experience on
surficial deposits, bedrock, major rivers and estuarine systems in
surrounding lands and on ocean margin sediments are thus invited to
contribute with reviews and new information about the mineralogy,
geochemistry, and biological/organic content of such potential sediment
sources. Applications to issues such as changes in erosional rates and
mechanisms through time will also be welcome. Participants in major
arctic research initiatives, including APEX, WARMPAST, IODP, etc., are
particularly invited to join.
Abstract submission deadline: Wednesday, 15 August 2012
Registration deadline: 1 October 2012

- Workshop Available
Matrix Population Models
27-30 August 2012
Fairbanks, Alaska
Organizers announce the availability of a Matrix Population Models
Workshop. The event will be held 27-30 August 2012 at the University of
Alaska Fairbanks.
Run by Christine M. Hunter (Assistant Professor of Wildlife Ecology,
University of Alaska Fairbanks) and Jean-Dominique Lebreton (Director of
Research at CNRS, Montpellier, France), the workshop will discuss field
population dynamics and matrix population modeling. It is aimed
primarily at quantitative ecologists and population
biologists--participants are expected to have a general interest in
quantitative approaches, familiarity with basic mechanisms in population
dynamics (life cycle, fecundity and mortality/survival processes),
knowledge of basic calculus, and basic matrix algebra. A full
description of the workshop is available at:
https://sites.google.com/site/matrixpopulationmodelsworkshop/.
The registration fee is $500.00 for general participants, and $250.00
for students. Participation is capped at 25 seats, and will be accepted
on a first-come, first-serve basis.
