The University of Edinburgh's School of Geosciences seeks candidates for
two lectureship positions in Glaciology and Remote Sensing of the
Cryosphere. Both are permanent full-time positions and are based in
Edinburgh, Scotland.
Candidates for the glaciology lectureship position should have
world-class expertise in glacial processes that affect ice-mass boundary
conditions. Expertise in the following areas is of particular interest:
ice-ocean interactions, glacial (including airborne) geophysics, surface
mass balance, and glaciological modeling including coupled hydrology-ice
dynamics and ice-ocean models.
Candidates for the remote sensing of the cryosphere lectureship position
should have developed (or show the potential to develop) an outstanding
program of research relevant to monitoring ice sheet response to climate
change from satellite-based remotely sensed platforms. Expertise in the
following areas is of particular interest: the monitoring of processes
at the ice sheet scale including ice motion, surface elevation change,
and additional indicators of mass balance such as detection of surface
melt.
Successful candidates for both positions will be expected to have an
international reputation in their field and a desire to communicate
beyond discipline boundaries. Contributions to teaching will be at all
levels, including the undergraduate degree programs and the
interdisciplinary postgraduate programs.

The European University at St. Petersburg (EUSP) announces the opening
of the British Petroleum (BP) Chair in the Migration Studies and seeks
candidates for the position of the Professor of BP Chair in Migration
Studies (BP Professor). The EUSP will sign a three-year contract with
the BP Professor starting in the fall of 2012. Exact dates and terms of
the contract will be discussed individually with each candidate. The
position is full-time and is based in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The goal of establishing the BP Chair in the Migration Studies is to
develop social anthropological studies of migration in contemporary
Russia. Funding for this Chair will support the full time BP Professor
position, one full-time research assistant, and research related
activities including fieldwork, archival work, travel, and part-time
assistants.
The BP Professor will have responsibility to:
- Create and launch the Program for Migration Studies at the EUSP
and design and supervise research projects on the migration
situation in St Petersburg;
- Conduct relevant academic and organizational activities within the
Department of Anthropology of the EUSP including organization of
seminars and conferences on migration studies;
- Teach relevant courses at the EUSP and develop teaching materials
for those courses;
- Supervise graduate and PhD students involved in research on
migration studies;
- Publicize results of research in academic journals and in mass
media;
- Engage in expert and policy-related analytical work; and
- Forge links between the academic community and the policy
community.
The successful candidate for the professor will have a PhD (or
equivalent); experience in social anthropological migration studies;
published articles about migration studies, including those in
peer-reviewed journals; and near-native competence in Russian and
English languages.

related to migration studies intended for teaching at EUSP, and names

Arctic Ecology and Remote Sensing
Moscow, Idaho
The University of Idaho and Columbia University seek candidates for a
PhD Assistantship in Arctic Ecology and Remote Sensing. The start date
for the position is either January or May 2013. The position will be
based in Moscow, Idaho.
This project will research links among arctic tundra shrub development,
climate and trophic chain dynamics, and thresholds in carbon cycling.
The successful candidate will work in the Alaskan Arctic and possibly
other ecosystems. Ecological remote sensing tools including laser
altimetry (lidar) and spectral image analysis will be used.
The project will be part of an interdisciplinary team at the University
of Idaho and Columbia University. Financial support is available via a
NASA Terrestrial Ecology and North American Carbon Programs project.
