Organizers of Remote Regions/Northern Development sessions at the 52nd
Annual Meeting of the Western Regional Science Association (WRSA)
announce a call for papers. The conference will be held 24-27 February
2013 at Fess Parker's Doubletree Resort in Santa Barbara, California.
The WRSA meeting includes a series of Remote Regions Northern
Development sessions to accommodate social scientists who have a special
interest in research on economic, social, political, and cultural issues
in remote, sparsely settled regions in the circumpolar north and
elsewhere. Organizers are again issuing a general call for papers from
social scientists doing research in northern and other remote regions.
The organization of special sessions is also welcomed, and organizers
are particularly interested in sessions that address a particular theme
from the perspective of a number of countries or regions. Please contact
Greg Protasel (GP [at] uaa.alaska.edu) if you are interested in organizing
such a session.
Information about association membership, registration, hotel
reservations, and related matters will be distributed to those
responding to the call for papers. To submit a paper, please send a copy

Arctic Frontiers
Geopolitics and Marine Production in a Changing Arctic

Organizers announce that Arctic Frontiers 2013 will be held 20-25
January 2013 in Tromso, Norway. The 2013 conference is entitled
'Geopolitics and Marine Production in a Changing Arctic.'
The Arctic Frontiers conference is a central arena for discussions on
arctic issues. The conference brings together representatives from
science, politics, and civil society to share perspectives on how
upcoming challenges in the Arctic may be addressed to ensure sustainable
development. Arctic Frontiers 2013 will focus on the current status,
challenges, and future perspectives of arctic geopolitics, security, and
marine productivity.
A call for papers for the scientific section of the conference,
scheduled 23-25 January (20-22 January will focus on policy) will open 1
July 2012. Interested scientists are invited to submit abstracts for
both oral and poster presentations. The scientific portion will be held
under three parallel sessions:
- Geopolitics in a changing arctic
- Marine harvesting in the Arctic
- Arctic marine productivity

World Snow Forum

Organizers announce that a conference entitled 'World Snow Forum' will
be held 17-20 January 2013 in Novosibirsk, Russia.
The conference will gather representatives from international
organizations, global experts on snow and wintertime problems, and
arctic city mayors and national authorities to discuss environmental
problems and city management issues specifically relevant to arctic
regions. It will raise issues of global geopolitical and environmental
problems, and discuss the development and preservation of northern
territories. The conference will be organized into three sessions:
- Snow and city management
- Snow and ecology
- Snow and sport
The World Snow Forum will also include an extensive cultural program
featuring ice and snow sculpture, dance, and various competitions.
