ARCUS is pleased to announce the winners of the paper competition for the
Third Annual ARCUS Award for Arctic Research Excellence. The abstracts of
the winning papers and a listing of all the 1999 participants can be found
on the ARCUS Web site at http://www.arcus.org. We thank all of the
competition participants for their submissions, which reflect the
excellence of young researchers working in the Arctic and the diversity of
their research.

The winners, by category, are:

INTERDISCIPLINARY: Nikolay I. Shiklomanov, Department of Geography,
University of Delaware, for his paper "Analytic representation of the
active layer thickness field Kuparuk River Basin, Alaska".

LIFE SCIENCES: Kimberlee Beckmen, Department of Biology and Wildlife,
University of Alaska Fairbanks, for her paper "Factors affecting
organochlorine contaminant concentrations in milk and blood of northern fur
seal dams and pups from St. George Island, Alaska".

PHYSICAL SCIENCES: Gilles Arfeuille, Department of Atmospheric and Ocean
Sciences McGill University, for his paper "Simulating the interannual
variability of the wind driven Arctic sea ice cover during 1958-1998".

SOCIAL SCIENCES: Kerrie Ann Shannon, Department of Sociology, University of
Aberdeen, for her paper "An examination of traditional knowledge: a case of
the Inuit sled dogs".

These winning students have been invited to attend the annual
ARCUS-sponsored ARCTIC FORUM in Washington D.C. on March 22, 1999 to
present their papers to an audience of arctic researchers, federal agency
personnel, and representatives of government and private organizations
involved in arctic research. Additionally, each winner will receive a $500
cash award.

The announcement and entry information for the Fourth Annual ARCUS Award
for Arctic Research Excellence (2000) will be distributed to the community
in late summer 1999. We hope that you will look for it and encourage your
students to submit papers to the competition.
