Dear Colleague:
NSF is working with the RAND corporation to assess the costs and logistics
for operating a SSN 637 class nuclear submarine as an unclassified
oceanographic research platform. Envisioned as a scientific submarine, it
could be used for a wide range of studies in the Arctic Ocean basin
(analogous to the SCICEX program which will be ending soon) and elsewhere
in the world ocean.
On 7 April 99 at the NSF's office the following people met to discuss and
identify the terms of reference for the RAND study on the costs of such a
scientific submarine program
Jack Bash (UNOLS)
Gary Brass (Arctic Research Commission)
Dennis Conlon (ONR)
Don Heinrichs (NSF)
Peter McRoy (U of Alaska)
Edward McGinley (Fluor-Daniel)
Barbara Moore (NOAA)
George Newton (Arctic Research Commission
Co-chair of the Steering Committee)
Tom Pyle (NSF, Co-chair of the Steering Committee)
Andrew Rothrock (U of Washington)
Ray Sambrotto (Columbia University)
James Swift (Scripps)
Frank Tesoriero (NAVSEA)
RAND Researchers:
Mark Arena (RAND)
Mal MacKinnon (MSCL)
Charles Meade (RAND)
