The Circumpolar PhD Network in Arctic Environmental Studies
announces the course

"Reindeer as a keystone species in the North: biological, cultural and
socio-economic aspects"

1-15 September, 2000

In September 2000 the Circumpolar PhD Network in Arctic Environmental
Studies (CAES) will start its PhD course program with the five credit (1
credit = 40 study hours) course "Reindeer as a keystone species in the
North: biological, cultural and socio-economic aspects". One of the
objectives of the CAES Network is to create a basis for interdisciplinary
knowledge, therefore the Course will be focused on environmental, cultural
and socio-economic related to the research questions in reindeer husbandry.
The Course will be organised as a travel course and will combine seminars
and field excursions in several places in Northern Finnish Lapland, Finnmark
in Norway and Kola Peninsula. The Course will take several approaches to the
studies of reindeer husbandry and environment in the North:

  • interrelations between reindeer, husbandry and environmental conditions
  • reindeer and their biophysical environment, including global climate
    change
  • reindeer ecophysiology, including the effects of environmental stress on
    health and welfare
  • reindeer husbandry as a component of environmental management
  • reindeer herding as a basis of culture, identity and livelihood
  • reindeer as an object of domestication and ownership
  • safety, health and working conditions for reindeer herders
  • contradictions between reindeer herding activity and other activities of
    modern society
  • future prospects and image-related questions of modern reindeer husbandry

The course will be the first in a series of courses organised by the CAES
Network. An intention of the Network is to create links between the courses,
therefore we expect some of the students to attend two or more courses.
Other courses in the chain are:

Industrial impacts on natural and social environments
(Kola Peninsula, Russia) - 2001

Climate change and related natural and social impacts in the Arctic
(Abisko, Sweden, or Svalbard, Norway) - 2002

Forestry activities in the Sub Arctic: environmental assessment and
simulation modelling
(Syktyvkar, Russia) - 2003

In August 1999 the CAES Network organised the 'Reindeer 2000' Workshop that
was a preparatory action for the announced course. The group of students, who
attended the Workshop, is our priority group although a limited number of
places are available for other applicants.
