The ANDRILL - United States Steering Committee invites applications for
participation in the United States ANDRILL Workshop to be held at the
Embassy Suites Hotel, Denver International Airport, 1-2 April 2005.
ANDRILL is an international research program designed to investigate
Antarctica's role in Cenozoic global environmental change through
stratigraphic drilling and numerical modeling. ANDRILL will obtain
stratigraphic records of key intervals and events in Earth's history
from locations proximal to the Antarctic cryosphere, using sea-ice and
glacial-ice as drilling platforms.
The workshop will provide essential information about the ANDRILL
approach to ice-platform stratigraphic drilling, and the long-term
scientific goals of the ANDRILL Program. Two ANDRILL Projects are
currently supported and aim to recover a record of ice sheet and climate
history and tectonic evolution of the southern McMurdo Sound region
(western Ross Sea), spanning the last ca. 20 m.y. These two projects, to
be drilled in 2006 and 2007, will provide exciting opportunities for new
and innovative research in multiple geoscience disciplines, including
paleontology, lithostratigraphy and sedimentology, geochemistry, glacial
geology, petrology, structural geology, downhole logging,
paleomagnetics, geochronology, cyclostratigraphy, geomicrobiology, data
integration, and numerical modeling. Specific information regarding the
scientific objectives of these two projects will be presented at the
workshop. Participants will also have an opportunity to provide input to
further develop science objectives for current and future drilling.
This workshop is organized by the ANDRILL-US Steering Committee to help
facilitate the US community's participation in the ANDRILL program, thus
applications for support to attend the workshop must be limited to
individuals from U.S. institutions. One of the primary aims of the
workshop is to provide detailed information to potential U.S.-based
participants in the ANDRILL program, including scientists, graduate
students, and interested educators and science journalists. We
especially encourage the participation of scientists new to Antarctic
research and interested educators with innovative ideas to bring
cutting-edge Antarctic research to the public. The on-ice scientific
party for each project is expected to consist of up to 27 senior
personnel with an equal number of off-ice personnel depending on
scientific need. U.S. staffing will comprise approximately 50% of the
total. Information on the competitive application and selection process
for science participants will be presented at the workshop.
Application for participation in the workshop should be sent by email to:
Laura Lacy, ANDRILL Research Support Coordinator
E-mail: llacy2 [at] unlnotes.unl.edu
Application Deadline: Wednesday, 16 February 2005.
Initial contact must include name, institution, email address, title,
highest degree, and specialty. You must also include a brief statement
of interest in the workshop and in ANDRILL. Attendance and financial
support is limited, so early application is encouraged.
Sponsored By: NSF-OPP Antarctic Geology and Geophysics Program.
